Reclaiming Wellness: What Our Ancestors Already Knew

Backstroke & Breakthroughs – Post #28

When you hear “wellness,” you might think of meditation apps, luxury retreats or complicated routines. But the truth is this: Black wellness didn’t start with modern trends; it started with us.

For generations, Black families created practices that kept us grounded, whole and connected. These weren’t labeled as “self-care,” but they were powerful forms of healing:

1. Communal Care

Whether it was a neighbor stopping by with food or a church member checking in, our communities practiced wellness through connection. We didn’t suffer alone and that support protected our mental health long before therapy was accessible.

2. Rest as Resistance

From Sunday naps to quiet porch moments, rest has always been a tool of survival. Today, it remains one of the most underrated forms of wellness we can reclaim.

3. Food and Rituals as Medicine

Homemade soups, herbal teas, Epsom salt baths (my personal favorite) and warm meals these were healing practices that still work today.

Music, prayer circles, and rhythmic movement regulate the nervous system. Our bodies respond to rhythm because it’s in our cultural DNA.

Reclaiming wellness is not about buying more. It’s about remembering more remembering the practices that kept our families grounded and allowing them to guide our healing today.

Still,
– J.R.
