The Power of Showing Up

Why Community Connection Matters

Over the past few months, I’ve had the opportunity to step into a new role, meet incredible people, and connect with organizations and community leaders throughout the Miami Valley.

One thing has become very clear to me:

There is so much good happening in our communities, but we have to take the time to connect with one another to see it.

As the Walk Manager for the Miami Valley Walk to End Alzheimer’s, a big part of my role is building relationships. I’m reaching out to businesses, nonprofits, community organizations, local leaders, and individuals who are passionate about making a difference.

But networking has become much more meaningful to me than simply exchanging business cards or asking someone to support an event.

It’s about people.

It’s about sitting down with someone and learning why they do what they do. It’s hearing about an organization’s mission and discovering the people behind it. It’s finding out what matters to someone, what challenges they’re facing, and where there might be an opportunity to help one another.

Recently, I attended a networking event with community leaders and entrepreneurs. We shared snacks, introduced our organizations, talked about our missions, and simply got to know each other.

I walked away with several business cards, but more importantly, I walked away with new relationships and conversations that I hope will continue.

And that’s what I want to talk about here.

We Need Each Other

It can be easy to get caught up in our own work, our own organizations, our own families, and our own day-to-day responsibilities.

But none of us operates in a vacuum.

Businesses need nonprofits. Nonprofits need businesses. Community leaders need one another. Entrepreneurs need connections. Families need resources. And sometimes, the person sitting across the table from you has an idea, resource, or connection that could make a tremendous difference.

You don’t always know where a conversation will lead.

Sometimes a simple introduction becomes a partnership.

Sometimes a business card becomes a volunteer.

Sometimes a conversation becomes a new Walk team.

Sometimes you discover that two organizations serving the same community can work together in ways neither had considered before.

And sometimes, there doesn’t need to be a specific outcome at all.

Sometimes it’s just good to meet someone new.

Connection Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

I think we sometimes make networking more complicated than it needs to be.

You don’t need a perfect elevator pitch.

You don’t need to walk into a room expecting to collect 20 business cards.

And you certainly don’t need to have something to ask from everyone you meet.

Start with curiosity.

“Tell me about what you do.”

“What brought you into this work?”

“What are you passionate about in our community?”

Those questions can lead to some incredible conversations.

And when we take the time to genuinely listen, we begin to understand how interconnected our community really is.

My Goal Moving Forward

I’m starting this blog because I want to share some of the people, organizations, events, and conversations I’m encountering throughout my community.

I want to highlight the good work happening around us and share some of the lessons I’m learning along the way.

Most importantly, I hope it encourages more people to show up, introduce themselves, start conversations, and get involved.

You never know who you’ll meet.

You never know what you’ll learn.

And you never know what can happen when people who care about their community start working together.

For me, that’s what community is all about.

Connection. Collaboration. And showing up for one another.

I’m looking forward to sharing this journey, and the people I meet along the way.
